You Can Write! Workshop

This workshop was held on Friday 18 June 2010 at CEFL Bayu Perdana. Students from CEFL Ambang Botanic and Setia Alam also participated in the workshop. The morning session was for primary students and the afternoon class for secondary pupils. The facilitator was Lydia Teh, author of Honk! If You're Malaysian and Do You Wear Suspenders? The Wordy Tales of Eh Poh Nim.

Participants went through the writing processes which include brainstorming and pre-writing and did a couple of writing exercises.

Some samples of the students' work:

Argentina had lost the World Cup. Messi gave up football and he burned all his equipment. He then went on a holiday to a beach. He saw a beautiful boat in the sea. He talked to a boy who was flying a kite nearby. He was the owner of the boat. The boy said he wanted a Fifa logo and Messi gave him the logo he had in his bag in exchange for the boat. He went sailing and never played football again.

Note: This was written before the World Cup kicked off. It's scarily prophetic, the bit about Argentina losing. If Messi were to hang up his boots following his dismal performance, it won't be surprising at all.

MY DREAM GIRLFRIEND

My dream girlfriend must have several important characteristics.

Firstly, I want my girlfriend to be pretty enough. She must have long, silky, hair, big and blue eyes, thick eyebrows and long legs. She must be slim and hot.

I also want my future girlfriend to be very intelligent. She must be highly educated. She must also know how to help me in my business.

Not only that, she must be good in everything. She must be a good chef as I only want to eat extremely delicious food. I want my future girlfriend to tell jokes and bedtime stories for me before I sleep every night.

Moreover, I want my girlfriend to have at least 11 to 12 children for me and she must be willing to take care of them. I don’t care if my children are boys or girls. It doesn’t matter. As long as she is willing to have children for me, then I will be very happy.

Lastly, whoever wants to be my girlfriend cannot be an Asian. She must be a European or African. I know my wishes will never be fulfilled. No matter how hard it is, I will do my best to find my dream girlfriend.

Note: Meet her in your dreams, friend.

An Unlucky Day

One morning on my way to school, I was feeling very tired because I slept at 2.00 a.m. the previous night. When I walked to a junction, I fell into a drain because I was pushed by a small kid. I was all wet.

I quickly went home to change into clean clothes. After that I went to school again. During recess, I wanted to buy some food to eat but when I checked my pocket, it was empty. I have forgotten to bring my wallet. I was very hungry.

After recess, I walked back to my class. I didn’t know why but when I sat down, my zip opened up. Everybody laughed loudly. At that moment, my face became as red as an apple. I quickly ran to the toilet. I think I was too hungry because I accidentally went to the girls’ toilet. The girls inside shouted like chickens. They chased me out.

“What an unlucky day!” I thought the bad luck was over but it wasn’t.

When school ended, I walked as slowly as a snail because I was extremely tired and hungry. Suddenly I stepped on something which felt like jelly.

“What the! It was shit!”

I walked home feeling even sadder. Then a dog chased me. I ran as fast as I could. Finally I reached my house. That was my worst day ever in my life. I will never forget it.
